The presentation of locally-crafted nativity scenes is a tradition dear to nearly every Italian at this time of year. Though it takes place in cities large and small, nothing will move you more than the way you encounter it in small towns and villages. Even time stands still to celebrate the simple beauty and reverence.

We invite you to join us from the comfort of your own home for a special visit to one such town, the medieval Portico di Romagna. Our guide, Matteo Cameli, will introduce us to the annual tradition among the residents, who set up hundreds of outdoor presepi (literally “cribs”) or nativity scenes near their homes, entirely transforming the village. Walk with us through scenes of different shapes, sizes and materials, placed in the most beautiful piazzas as well as common windows and benches, all displaying wondrous inspiration and imagination. And when the “illuminations” twinkle and come to life, it’s even more evocative.

This extraordinary tradition has earned the village the nickname of “Il Paese Dei Presepi,” the village of the nativity scenes. This holiday season, it is our gift to you.
