The Joy of Making Memories Together

Traditions are a ray of light in the darkest of days, as if to remind us that our hope is always concrete, daily, and domestic — and that we create it with our own hands, together. At this time of the year all over Italy there are handmade presepi (Nativity scenes) and in every kitchen in Romagna, families are making cappelletti in brodo, the symbol of Natale.

Gathering together, co-creating experiences, sharing and giving back are central themes for our small but compassionate Esperienza community. Like many of us, I am looking back at the past year, and I feel an overwhelming sense of joy and gratitude.

The most memorable moments this year were both planned and spontaneous: Making pasta with the volunteer “Mariette” in Forlimpopoli, or making pesto Trapanese on a farm in Calatafimi. Courageously reciting a new poem written while studying in Verucchio. Improvising with Teatro Altrove in a remote hamlet, or shedding a tear in Pennabilli when moved by the stories and the countless treasures we were offered there. Walking peacefully in the steps of St. Francis, and feeling our spirits lifting as we slowed down to quiet our worries and experience beauty. Or an unexpected serenade from a still-passionate 72-year old teacher, as she captivated us with an ancient song and her desire to bridge the distance and welcome us to her world.

The one theme that has been constant throughout all our Esperienza travels is the Italian cuisine. And now that UNESCO has declared its contribution to humanity, we are more than proud that our longtime partner Casa Artusi helped make it happen. To celebrate, we are inviting Casa Artusi to the Twin Cities for a week-long residency in late-March. (Stay tuned for details.)

We are committed to creating more hope and joy wherever we can in the year ahead, and remember your Esperienza community is always near - online or in person during our tours. And if you cannot travel but want to support Esperienza, we invite you to support our mission by making a donation here.

Buone feste,
Anna and Team Esperienza
