More Than Just Hiking
A Pilgrimage That Leads To Discovery
A hiking trail can take you somewhere. But a pilgrimage helps you see where you are.
At Esperienza, we believe some of the most meaningful travel experiences happen when we slow down enough to notice the details. Our hiking trips make room for local food, history, conversations, stories, and cultural experiences.
Walking creates space to leave behind everyday worries and preoccupations, appreciate the beauty around you, and connect with fellow travelers and the people you meet along the way. Fresh perspectives and unexpected discoveries can make each day memorable—and perhaps even give you a chance to reconnect with yourself.
Join us for a deeply enriching journey that combines adventure, serenity, and unforgettable Italian hospitality.
Choose Your Italian Hiking Journey
Our hiking programs offer different landscapes, levels of physical challenge and cultural touchpoints. What they share is an invitation to walk, reflect, explore and connect deeply and intentionally — with Italy, with fellow travelers and perhaps with yourself.
In the Steps of St. Francis
A Pilgrimage Through the Italian Apennines
12 days / 11 nights
Follow the Cammino di San Francesco from the seaside city of Rimini on the Adriatic coast to the Sanctuary of La Verna in the Apennine mountains on the Tusco-Romagnolo border, walking through the countryside and villages associated with St. Francis of Assisi.
This immersive 75-mile journey combines five days of 14–16 miles of trekking with days exploring quaint medieval villages like Verucchio, San Leo, Pennabilli and Sant’Agata Feltria, capping the hike with two days in Bagno di Romagna.
Along the way, enjoy exceptional local food and wine while discovering historic sites, museums, places of spiritual significance and even a cooking lesson.
The journey includes carefully selected accommodations, logistical support and daily luggage transfers.
In the Steps of St. James
Hiking the Cammino di San Giacomo in Sicily
10 days / 9 nights
Walk through the heart of rural Sicily on a newer, quieter segment of the Camino de Santiago: the Cammino di San Giacomo, or Way of St. James.
The 45-mile pilgrimage journey through central Sicily includes hiking days of 7–12 miles, linking historic villages, rolling hills, forests, farms and vineyards. You'll begin in Caltagirone and travel through town including Piazza Armerina, Enna, Assoro, Nissoria, Nicosia and end in Capizzi.
Along the way, you'll encounter UNESCO heritage sites, local food and wine, stories about St. James and the generous hospitality of the Sicilian people.
Compared with our St. Francis journey, the St. James path is intentionally designed to be less rigorous while still offering a satisfying hiking experience.
Meet the People Who Bring Italy to Life
The trail is only part of the journey.
On both hiking itineraries, travelers are guided by local experts whose lives are closely connected to the cammino and the communities along the way. They help you understand the significance of each place by sharing its history, traditions, stories and personal connections.
These encounters are central to the Esperienza Way. Rather than simply observing Italy from a distance, you can experience Italy up close and in a personal way.
Walk, Eat, Discover
Walking through Italy naturally leads to another essential part of the experience: food.
Our hiking journeys include opportunities to enjoy regional, sometimes hyper-local cuisine—from everyday local meals to memorable dining experiences.
Food isn't an add-on to the itinerary. It is part of the culture you're discovering. A meal can tell you something about a landscape, while a local ingredient can reveal a region's history. Sitting around a table creates the kind of connection that doesn't happen when you're simply passing through.
Rather than just walking through Italy, you’re invited to experience an Italy encompassed in the trail.
Why Travel with Esperienza?
Small Groups
Our groups are intentionally small, generally limited to 8–12 travelers. That makes it easier to get to know your fellow travelers, interact with local hosts and enjoy a more personal experience.
Local Expertise
Our journeys are guided by people who know the landscapes, history and communities you're visiting. Their knowledge helps transform a trail into a story.
Beyond the Tourist Trail
We focus on places where you can experience a quieter, more authentic side of Italy—away from the crowds and centered on the character of each region.
Thoughtful Support
Transportation, accommodations, meals, luggage transfers and logistical support are carefully planned so you can focus on the experience rather than the details.
A Slower Pace
Our trips aren't designed around checking as many sights as possible off a list. There is time to walk, explore, eat, rest, talk and simply notice where you are.
Meaningful Travel
Esperienza is a nonprofit organization founded around the belief that travel can bring people together, celebrate Italian culture and create genuine connections between travelers and hosts.

Frequently Asked Questions
How difficult are Esperienza's hiking tours?
The difficulty varies by program. The St. James Way is rated Activity Level 4 and includes hiking days of approximately 7–12 miles, with some elevation gains. It is intentionally less rigorous than Esperienza's St. Francis Way, which is rated Activity Level 5. A support vehicle is available during the hiking days.
Do I have to be an experienced hiker?
You don't necessarily need extensive hiking experience, but you should be comfortable with the physical demands of the specific program. Daily mileage, terrain and elevation vary, so review the activity information carefully before choosing a tour.
Are these Cammino hikes a religious pilgrimage?
Travelers may be drawn to the journey for spiritual, cultural, historical or personal reasons. While the itineraries explore the traditions and history associated with St. Francis and St. James, they also emphasize the natural environment, local culture, food and human connection and are not designed as religious pilgrimages.
What is the Camino de Santiago in Sicily?
Associated with the broader Camino de Santiago tradition, the Cammino di San Giacomo is a newer pilgrimage route in central Sicily . Our tour, In The Steps of St. James, follows approximately 45 miles of this route through rural Sicily, historic towns, countryside and culturally significant sites.
How is The Way of St. James different from the Camino de Santiago in Spain?
The St. James journey takes place in rural Sicily along a newer segment of the Camino de Santiago tradition. It offers a much quieter experience than the heavily traveled routes in Spain, with an emphasis on rural landscapes, historic villages and authentic encounters with local communities.
How is the St. James hike different from the St. Francis hike?
Both are immersive pilgrimage hiking experiences, but they differ in geography and physical intensity. St. Francis travels through the Italian Apennines and includes five days of trekking associated with the Cammino di San Francesco. St. James takes place in central Sicily and is intentionally designed to be less rigorous.
What if I cannot hike or need to shorten the day?
For both trips, a van transports luggage from point to point each hiking day. If you're unable to hike for the full day, the van can take you directly to the next destination. If you need support during the day, the van may also pick you up at various locations along the Way of St. James, and at one specific location per day on the Way of St. Francis. More details are available upon request.
