About Santa Sofia

Santa Sofia is the newest location for Esperienza’s Italian language immersion program. A municipality of approximately 4,000 inhabitants located on the banks of the Bidente River in the province of Forlì-Cesena, at the foot of the Campigna Forest within the UNESCO recognized Casentinesi Forests National Park.

It originated as a medieval settlement featuring two castles: Mortano, on the right bank of the river, and Santa Sofia, on the left. Situated on the border of Tuscany and Romagna, its gastronomic culture remains closely linked to Tuscany, and is often referred to as Tuscan-Romagnola.

The tumultuous history of the city and its close ties to the Apennines have contributed to a unique culture which treasures conviviality, solidarity and creativity. Art gems abound both within the vast art gallery as well as in the extraordinary open-air sculpture park. Nearby cultural and spiritual landmarks include the Camaldoli Hermitage and the Sanctuary of La Verna among many others waiting to be discovered and celebrated. Yet nothing compares to the passion, kindness and generosity of its inhabitants.

“We loved the breathtaking village of Verucchio and the tranquility it offered. We could repeat this trip annually!”
